Community Solid Waste Management and Recycling Project
Project Host:  Watamu Marine Association
County: Kilifi

The ‘Community Based Solid Waste Management and Recycling Development Project’ was conceived to respond to the deteriorating state of waste disposal in the terrestrial and marine environment of Malindi and Watamu towns. The local residents dump their waste directly into the ocean, gradually turning beach into a health hazard and an eyesore. The impact of the solid waste has deteriorated the local environment resulting in threats to human health and welfare and potentially discouraging tourists from visiting the area. This also poses a more a serious socio-economic concern as many coastal communities depend on tourism as their primary source of income and employment.

Project Objectives

  1. To increase knowledge, skills and capacity on solid waste management in local schools and communities
  2. To enhance the institutional capacity of the local CSOs involved in the project on community project management.

Project Outcomes

  1. Establishment of waste management systems in schools with emphasis on reducing, re-using and recycling through the schools environment clubs (4K Clubs).
  2. Establishment of partnerships among the local schools, CSOs and Malindi LUF in management environmental issues and specifically waste management.
  3. Strengthened partnership between Malindi LUF and the County Government.
